Another epic battle between two of the greatest boxers in the world today. Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fought again yesterday to a very close match, with Manny Pacquiao clinching the victory via a somewhat controversial majority decision.
Up until today, fans have been talking about how the fight was awarded to Manny Pacquiao, that Juan Manuel Marquez deserve the win. To be honest, as I watch the fight live in SM Cinema, I thought that Juan Manuel Marquez did enough to win the fight. So how come the judges give the fight to Manny Pacquiao?
I want to find the answer myself so I tried watching Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez 3 again as objectively as I could. To my surprise, after tallying all the scores from rounds 1-12, I had Manny Pacquiao winning 115-113, just as the same score from one of the judges.
How I come up with the scores? Here is the breakdown of what I thought for every round. I am no boxing expert, just a thought from a long time boxing fan.
At the opening round, I saw Manny Pacquiao initiating the action more and more active than Juan Manuel Marquez, though Marquez is trying to counterpunch in every attack.
In round 2, Marquez started counter punching effectively. The only punch that I saw that effectively landed from Pacquiao was a left hand.
Good counter punching again by JMM in round 3, however, Pacquiao is initiating the action. He is the aggressor. It was a very close round in my opinion until Manny Pacquiao landed a hard counter right hook which stopped the attack of Marquez and probably had him hurt.
Manny’s left hand beginning to land in round 4. It landed a number of times which probably earn Manny Pacquiao the round. The only clear punch that I saw from Marquez was the counter right just before the bell.
JMM started to dominate Manny Pacquiao in round 5, boxing very beautifully. He is landing hard counter right and Pacquiao is getting owned in this round. It continues through round 6 and 7, while Pacquiao is getting aggressive in every round, Marquez is landing the clearer shots. Round 8 is a very close round which I gave to Marquez as well.
At round 9, Manny Pacquiao is getting aggressive by the minute. Though Marquez landed some counter punches, the round went to Pacquiao as he threw a number of punches and landing some to Marquez face.
Pacquiao continues his aggressiveness throughout rounds 10 and 11 with his in and out motion. This is the kind of ‘Manny Pacquiao’ we saw from his previous fights.
At the start of the 12th round, I got a feeling that Marquez will just hang out as he thought that he is winning in the scorecard, which I thought too. Manny Pacquiao continues to be the aggressor trying to snatch the last round, which I thought he did.
As I scored the fight, I really thought that Juan Manuel Marquez won the match. After adding up the scorecards, I am kinda surprised that Pacquiao got the fight with the score of 115-113 . It turned out had Marquez made an effort to win the 12th round, it could have been a draw. But he did not do so which cost him the fight. Many boxing analysts also said that the 12th round cost JMM the fight. We probably used in seeing Manny decimating his opponents. Though he did not hurt Marquez that bad, the judges gave Pacquiao the nod. With this, I am convinced that our very own Manny Pacquiao indeed deserve the majority decision and the win.
So what’s next for Pacquiao?
I believe that Manny Pacquiao needs to get used in fighting counter punchers especially if the fight with Floyd Mayweather will happen. He must learn how to cut the ring more often. In his third fight against Marquez, he just followed Marquez mostly throughout the fight, which made it easy for Marquez to counter.
Nevertheless, It was a great match and I don’t mind seeing these two great boxers fighting again for the fourth time.
